The Importance of SpaceX's IFT-5

· 1 year ago · Space, Uncategorized

SpaceX, an American aerospace and astronautics company led by Elon Musk, recently completed their IFT-5 (Integrated Flight Test 5) mission, where they launched a Starship spacecraft to Earth orbit, and returned the booster to the launch site by propulsively landing it using its Raptor engines. SpaceX livestreamed the mission on X, and you can rewatch it below:

This wasn't just any test flight, this was the test flight of a fully and rapidly reusable interplanetary-class spacecraft launch system that is ultimately going to enable humans to begin the early stages of Mars colonization. The rocket is separated into 2 different stages, with the first stage being the booster, which propels the Starship into the upper atmosphere. The second stage is the Starship ship, which carries humans or cargo, and coasts in space. In this test flight, SpaceX achieved its goal of successfully catching the second stage (booster) mid-air using robotic arms from the launch tower, while the booster was descending using its engines.

This accomplishment is important because it marks a major milestone in humanity's journey towards fully and rapidly reusable rockets and spacecraft, eventually allowing for frequent and inexpensive space travel, much like how airplanes operate. You launch, coast in space, land, refuel, and repeat. This simply is not feasible without total and rapid reusability of every part of the spacecraft and its booster. Starship is fully reusable. You launch, land, re-stack the ship on the booster, refuel, and repeat.

Companies like SpaceX are truly the primary driving forces towards a better future. If SpaceX's vision of humanity becoming a multi-planetary species never becomes a reality, humanity will simply die out as it will be confined to Earth forever until some eventual catastrophic extinction event, whether it be natural or induced by humans. Starship is SpaceX's primary method of getting humans, cargo, and other payloads off of Earth and onto Mars, to send supplies in preparation for human missions and eventual full-scale colonization.

More companies, entities, and nations supporting SpaceX's vision, and/or competing with SpaceX, will lead to more technological innovation, progress, and overall a better future. If you'd like to learn more about SpaceX, we suggest visiting their website at https://spacex.com/

Without advancements in spaceflight and space exploration, humanity is on a path towards death.
